Operating OpenStage Phones with Asterisk
This page contains information on operating OpenStage SIP phones with the Asterisk open source PBX, and on the additional possibilities provided with the phone's various interfaces.
Introduction
All phones of the OpenStage SIP family with SIP firmware version ≥ V1 R5.6.0 are interoperable with Asterisk:
- OpenStage 15 (Digium certified)
- OpenStage 20
- OpenStage 40
- OpenStage 60 (Digium certified)
- OpenStage 80
Common telephony features are supported out of the box, such as call transfer, call forwarding, consultation, voicemail, and many more. To add more functionality in order to build a feature-rich communication system, two additional interfaces can be used by developers:
- The OpenStage WPI (WorkPoint Interface) provides an open, XML-based provisioning interface to support mass deployment and to enable automated updates and configuration.
- OpenStage 60 and 80 provide an XML-based application interface which allows for developing graphical applications hosted on a remote server. Besides displaying information, sending data, and controlling all sorts of remote processes, these applications have the capability of controlling calls.
Special Features for Asterisk
The following functionalities enhance the user experience with OpenStage phones at Asterisk:
- BLF key for monitoring another extension: A free programmable key (FPK) can be used to monitor another extension, and to pick up calls for that extension. The LED of the key indicates the status of the extension monitored.
- Send an HTTP request: Free programmable keys (FPKs) and fixed function keys can be configured to send an HTTP request to a server. This can be used to control Asterisk functions, if the Asterisk server is equipped with an appropriate HTTP interface.
- Control a server feature via SIP: Free programmable keys (FPKs) and fixed function keys can be configured to send a feature code as SIP INVITE to the Asterisk server. The LED of the key can be used to indicate the status of this feature.
- Distinctive ringtone: In an incoming call (SIP INVITE), Asterisk send a special SIP Alert-Info header which tells the phone to use a particular ringtone for this call.
